To truly grasp the progress of jazz is to hear how the music changed through its rhythmic component: from the phrasing of soloists, to the beats and grooves favored by the drummers. Many times it’s the drummers who understand best of where the music came from, and where it is going. Peter Erskine and Jeff Hamilton and two of today’s leading jazz drummers; they will meet and speak about their craft and about their respective roots and influences. They will also explain the sounds and rhythms in today’s scene that are pointing the way forward. Musical selections chosen by the two drummers will be played and discussed, and Ashley Kahn will moderate.
