If there’s one musician for whom the Birdland Jazz Club would gladly open its doors on a Tuesday evening, shortening its summer break, it’s Jeff Hamilton. A full twelve years have passed since the Grammy-winning American drummer last graced his Neuburg “living room.” But the love affair between the now 72-year-old star drummer and Neuburg has never faded. Their musical and personal friendship began in the 1990s. Then came a hiatus during which Hamilton rose to international stardom. Giants like Diana Krall, Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rodgers, Michael Bublé, Barry Manilow, Willie Nelson, Gladys Knight, and Queen Latifah drew upon his inimitable rhythmic feel, and opportunities to tour with his own band became scarce. Now, however, Hamilton’s fans can look forward to a reunion, as well as two talented musicians who will help him open a new chapter in his career. The brilliant Japanese pianist Tadataka Unno and the smooth American bassist Jon Hamar form Hamilton, a trio that celebrates the high art of all-pervading swing with well-shaped harmonies, colorful tempos, and produces music that sounds like a gift from a good, old friend.
